What Can the iPhone 11’s A13 Bionic Chip Do?

Apple has claimed that the iPhone 11 has the fastest chip in an iPhone, and possibly the fastest chip in any smartphone ever, the A13 Bionic.

For several years, Apple has been determined to own the fastest central processing unit (CPU) in the market. Although iPhones may not have the fastest cellular speed, there’s no doubt that the A13 Bionic is a system on a chip that other smartphones have to beat.

Bleeding-edge 7nm+ process

The A13 Bionic is among the first to use TSMC’s new second-generation seven-nanometer process. Also known as the 7nm+ or 7NP, it means more tightly packed transistors that leak less power. In simple terms, it equals a big increase in maximum performance and power efficiency.

The CPU gets faster

Just when you think it won’t get any faster, Apple shows that they can top their own performance. The A13 Bionic Chip is said to be 20 per cent faster than the A12 with its large high-performance CPU cores and four energy-efficient CPU cores. This improvement will prove to be a challenge for Qualcomm and other chips.

Improved power efficiency

With the A13 Bionic, Apple claims that its GPU and high-efficiency CPU cores use 40 per cent lower power, the high-performance CPU cores use 30 per cent less, and the Neural Engine uses 15 per cent less power. The company said this is achieved by having hundreds of voltage domains to lower power to major parts of the chip when not in use.

Made for machine learning

The A13 Bionic chip has a set of “machine learning accelerators” that perform matrix multiplication operations up to six times faster than the CPU alone. As a result, machine learning code should run much faster on the A13 than on the A12.


There’s no doubt that the A13 Bionic Chip has raised the bar for other smartphones in the market. No other chips come close to the A13, and you can only get it in the iPhone 11.
